KleeWyckCover 1941Good thing the Merrickville and District Historical Society does such a great job of getting the word out. I’m so busy working on the third volume of Emily Carr’s BC that I haven’t posted a word about this presentation. As requested by the organizers, I’ll be focusing on Emily’s relationship with Indigenous people as illustrated in her first book, Klee Wyck, and I’ll also be talking a bit about the settler experience she recorded in her second book, The Book of Small. Part of the Merrickville 225 celebrations. June 17, Merrickville Legion, 2 pm. (more…)

Emily Carr EvolutionTruly delighted by the interest in Emily Carr here in my new home village. I’ve been asked to talk about Carr’s art and not being any sort of art expert, I’ve decided to discuss the evolution of her work based on the influence of events in her life.

In Search of Emily Carr: Documentary Images & Photographic Art | Merrickville Public Library

2018-01 Library Show PosterDuring the five summers I traced and retraced the more than 20,000 kilometres of Emily Carr’s West Coast sketching trips, capturing images to include in my trilogy, Emily Carr’s BC, I also found subjects that spoke personally to me of the people and landscapes that so inspired Emily. These I’ve taken beyond the constraints of editorial photography to the realm of photographic art and included a selection with the documentary images on exhibition now at the Merrickville Public Library.

The show continues through January. Click Read More for library details.

2b9a3839-carr-houseFantastic event at Emily Carr House in Victoria. With free admission sponsored by the Victoria Foundation, curator Jan Ross estimated some 1,000 people visited the birthplace and family home of the woman who has inspired me to travel the province visiting the places she lived and worked. I gave two talk/readings and had a wonderful time talking for hours with an amazing array of Emily Carr fans and even met some of my social media friends. It was just super.

2016-09-17 EventIf you’re going to be in Victoria on September 17, I’d love to see you at Emily Carr House. Great opportunity to chat about Emily and her travels, with readings from Book Two of the trilogy, Emily Carr’s BC: Northern BC & Haida Gwaii. This terrific event is hosted by Jan Ross, curator of Emily Carr House, with free admission sponsored by the Victoria Foundation as part of their Victoria Foundation Day. I’m delighted to be talking about Emily’s travels against the backdrop of Jen Burgess’ art in her exhibition “on a Tangent Tear.”
Hope to see you there.
