Laurie Carter’s stories and photographs appear in books, newspapers, magazines and online. They reflect a broad range of interests, although her abiding love of nature remains a dominant theme. Some years ago, that passion, and a stroke of serendipity, unexpectedly set her on a new, but related trajectory. She became inspired by the life and work of artist and author Emily Carr.
Laurie has since travelled extensively throughout British Columbia, following in Emily's footsteps with singular purpose. She's made it her personal mission to introduce this Canadian icon to a wider audience— to new generations—while continuing to highlight Carr’s legacy for those who already appreciate her work.
Along the way Laurie has indulged her passion for history, explored Indigenous culture, met fascinating people, and gained even greater admiration for the woman she regards as an important role model for our times.
Laurie also loves a good who-done-it. Add in that deep connection with nature and her abiding respect for wildlife and you've got the inspiration for her Taylor Kerrick mystery novels.
Laurie lived in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley for more than twenty-five years before returning to Ontario to settle in a quaint village where she shares a cozy century home with her husband, writer/photographer Bruce Kemp, and their adopted kitty, Lew.
Laurie Carter is the author of the ground-breaking trilogy, Emily Carr's BC. The first book, Vancouver Island was a finalist for the North American Travel Journalists Association Travel Book of the Year and it won a Travel Media Association of Canada Photography Award. Book 2: Northern BC & Haida Gwaii was a finalist for the Whistler Independent Book Awards non-fiction Book of the Year. Laurie's journalism and photography accolades include a Canadian Tourism Commission Northern Lights Award and numerous Travel Media Association of Canada writing and photography awards.
